Programme Purpose & Overview

​The primary objective of the FirstRand Chartered Accountant training program is to provide trainees with extensive, practical financial experience across corporate banking, risk management, operations, and financial analysis. Successful candidates will be mentored to build the core competencies required to qualify and excel as a Chartered Accountant.

​Key Performance Areas & Trainee Responsibilities

​Participants in the FirstRand 2027 CA Programme will engage in a wide range of operational, financial, and strategic activities designed to develop robust analytical and leadership skills:

​1. Cost Management & Financial Consciousness

  • ​Demonstrate strong cost consciousness and maintain awareness of personal contributions to operational costs and productivity.
  • ​Identify and escalate potential risks that could lead to unexpected costs.
  • ​Prevent wastage and propose internal process improvements aimed at containing and reducing overheads.

​2. Service Delivery & Stakeholder Engagement

  • ​Adhere strictly to organisational values, service standards, and ethical codes when communicating with internal and external customers.
  • ​Ensure first-time resolution of customer queries or complaints, taking full ownership of requirements through to resolution.
  • ​Consistently meet set turnaround times with accuracy, availability, and reliability.
  • ​Build and maintain professional relationships across various departments to deliver on business goals and uphold Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

​3. Governance, Risk & Process Optimization

  • ​Comply fully with governance and compliance standards, escalating any discrepancies for immediate investigation.
  • ​Identify, manage, and escalate routine operational risks as part of daily tasks.
  • ​Leverage modern technology platforms to optimize business processes, improve service delivery, and boost quality standards.

​4. Professional & Personal Development

  • ​Take ownership of personal career growth by creating and regularly reviewing a personal development plan (PDP) with team leaders.
  • ​Actively seek out performance feedback and address technical learning gaps.
  • ​Stay up-to-date with evolving market trends, financial products, and SAICA competency requirements.
